MEASURE BY MEASURE

I have been going to the gym regularly for a while now…not that I’m preparing for any contest though 😊. I just want to stay fit and toned. My trainer focuses on different muscles every day, with the objective of hitting every muscle group at least once each week. To achieve the desired result each day, I have to go through a fixed number of repetitions of an assigned activity for multiple sets. If I don’t hit the agreed number of repetitions and sets, the output will be sub-optimal. Also, as I developed a consistent rhythm of gym attendance, the weights that I use for the strength exercises have progressively increased. If I don’t increase the weights, my muscle toning will become stagnant. If I go back to the old weights, it feels as if I am not doing any work, just like drinking water with a teaspoon when you are thirsty. The measure of result that I feel in my body will depend on the measure of effort that I put in at the gym.

Because of this experience, the verse below in the Classic Amplified Version now comes with added significance to me. I can fully relate.

The measure of attention we give to the Word of God that we read or hear will determine the measure of fruit that will show forth in and through our lives. The drill should be to consciously engage and meditate until the “Word becomes flesh” in our hearts. In most cases, it would require devotion of a significant amount of time and bandwidth. We should not just hear the Word and get all excited at the moment and then move on as if nothing happened. No matter how deep the revelation might be, we need to build the personal discipline of going back to chew the cud like ruminants to extract all there is for us in the Word. If not, we will ultimately remain at the same spot.

In the parable of the sower, the seed that fell on good ground brought forth fruit that was thirty, sixty, and a hundred times more than what had been planted. In this case, the seed was the same, the fertile soil was the same, but the yield was not all the same across all the fronts. Some sections yielded a thirty-fold return, while some others returned a hundred-fold. What could be the difference? We could come up with multiple suggestions and reasons, but one thing is sure – the fault was not from the seed. The Word is permanently potent. It must have had to do with the measure of something.

It’s not just enough to hear the Word. It’s not just enough to read the Word. It’s not just enough to memorize the Word. The Word needs to move from our ears, our lips and our eyes into our hearts, where all the issues of life flow from. We need to engage with the Word in our hearts until all the issues of our lives are coloured by the Word. The measure of our engagement will determine the measure of the impact of the Word in and through our lives.

F A I T H

Let’s just imagine that the setting is one of the consulting rooms of a renowned specialist hospital, and the main actor is one of the best doctors around. After checking the vital signs and listening to the symptoms that are presented, he arrives at the conclusion that the patient is suffering from Angina pectoris  and he goes on to explain that this is chest pain due to ischemia of the heart muscle,  generally due to obstruction or spasm of the coronary arteries.

9 out of 10 times, we may not understand all the high sounding words that doctors use, but we believe them and take their prescriptions seriously. We just believe that doctors are always right and we don’t challenge their conclusions. Now that is what I call FAITH.  We just take their words for it. I got this idea of faith recently at a Bible teaching meeting I attended.

The truth is that the doctor is human and is also fallible. However, we have a Father, who made the doctor and He is also Almighty. He has never failed in fulfilling His promises and He can never fail. It is not just possible for Him to fail. Yet we don’t find it very easy to take Him by His word. …Oh what things we often forfeit…

Putting all these together, I can come up with another definition of faith, which is: Believing God’s word just the way He said it, without thinking about how possible it would be for Him to fulfil it. Abraham possibly had this definition in mind when he was going to sacrifice Isaac. He remembered that God promised him saying:

“…Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.” Heb 11: 18 (NLT)

So, Abraham was not bothered about losing his only son. God made a promise to him and he was sure that God would keep His word. It did not have to make sense to him, but there was no way he was going to doubt God.

Is this kind of faith still available?

SEMPER FIDELIS

Recently, I was reading a book; Point Man by Steve Farrar and I came across the term Semper Fidelis. It is the motto of the United States Marine Corps and it just means ALWAYS FAITHFUL. The keyword in the two-word motto is ALWAYS.

Always actually means always. It reminds me of some lines in the anthem of the Nigerian National Youth Service Corps (NYSC):

…Let us lift our nation high                                                                                                               Under the sun or in the rain                                                                                                    With dedication and selflessness…

Semper Fidelis means that your faithfulness should be unconditional and unwavering. It means faithful to the very end. Faithful to God in good times and in bad times. Faithful to God when it is convenient and faithful when it is not. Faithful to God when there is a profit to be made and when there is a loss to bear and I dare say, faithful to God when all you have laboured for is on the line.

You can say that this is the message that King David wanted to pass across when he wrote in the second part Psalms 15: 4

He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.(KJV)

who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind;(NIV)

Keep your word even when it costs you (MSG)

No matter the pain or the cost, I believe that God wants us to stay faithful to the truth even when lies have become the norm and everybody is falling in line. Faithful to the principles in the word of God, bearing in mind that the word of God does not change with the times. God does not abhor vices like adultery any less today than how he abhorred them in the days of Noah, just because it’s the ‘way to go’ now. If He is still the same God, then His likes and dislikes are still the same.

Granted, there may be more challenges in our days than there were in the early days, but God still promised us that He will make a way with each of those new challenges. This commitment for the Marines does not come naturally and painlessly. They have to make some heavy sacrifices to live it out. If you really want to remain committed and faithful to God, it is not going to be a stroll in the park. You can be sure that the enemy will try to hit you with his best shot. You can also be sure that God is standing by you to help you remain always faithful. Put your hands in His hands, move from just knowing what the Word says to obeying what the Word says. Remain Semper Fidelis!
