Device or Creed

Recently, I was snooping around Youtube for worship videos and I stumbled upon a hymn that I had not heard in a long while. I got stuck and ended up listening to different versions of the same song. I have placed the first verse and the chorus below:

My faith has found a resting place,
  Not in device nor creed;
I trust the Ever-living One,
  His wounds for me shall plead.

I need no other argument,
  I need no other plea;
It is enough that Jesus died,
    And that He died for me.

As I kept replaying the song, it got me thinking about what it meant to trust in device or creed. One of the versions I listened to has that second line as:

 Not in a man-made creed

 I arrived at the conclusion that it means moving our trust from the ever living God to man-made doctrines, principles or beliefs that have no foundation in the word of God. It is very easy to put high sounding words together and appear convincing. This is the case especially in our generation, where personal bible study is not very popular and we don’t make any effort to verify the correctness of all that we hear from the ‘alter’.

You have the personal responsibility to ensure that you are not led astray. If you are reading this, it means that you are literate and can read the bible for yourself. Go ahead and maximize that potential. The Holy Spirit has been given to us all to guide us into all truth, to teach us everything that we need to know in the Word.

 It will be profitable if we heed the warning in 1John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” God’s grace is available to you.

    Thank you so much for this article! This has been a pressing thought in my heart.
    2Ti 2:15 Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.
    Without us fully grounded in God’s Word, we cant fully understand and obtain what has been freely given to us. Let us make it our point of duty to study like we have never done as we march on in this glorious year and the grace of God will be available to appropriate what we learn in Jesus Name, Amen.
